.Opportunities for learners, to challenge themselves, work with others, network, and be recognized for their hard work.
There are many organizations preparing learners for careers in Information Technology. Below are a number of links for you to explore and discover, participate in, and be the best you can be.
See Mr. Sontz for more information. He highly encourages you to participate, and supports you as a mentor.
In 2014, NetRiders will be held in the spring for both high school and post-secondary students and the structures have changed from past years. We are no longer making the distinction between high school and post-secondary. And the competition will be in two rounds instead of three. For all the eligibility requirements and rules of the competition, please download the Rules PDF and FAQ files for the competition you are interested in.
There are two skill levels being offered aligning to Cisco CCENT and CCNA Routing and Switching certifications. Eligible competitors and their proctoring instructors can register for NetRiders during the open registration period and self-select the competition they choose to participate in based on which CCNA courses they are currently enrolled in or recently completed. Students represent the Cisco Networking Academy and state or province where they are currently attending or most recently completed a course at. This may differ from their home state or province.
Cisco Networking Academy NetRiders IT skills competitions are a great opportunity for students and alumni in the United States and Canada to showcase their networking abilities, learn valuable new IT skills, and gain visibility among talent recruiters in the growing ICT and networking field.

Background
While similar to other cyber defense competitions in many aspects, the CyberWatch Mid-Atlantic Regional CCDC, as part of the National CCDC,
is unique in that it focuses on the operational aspects of managing
and protecting an existing network infrastructure. The teams are
physically co-located in the same building. Each team is given
physically identical computer configurations at the start of the
competition. Throughout the competition, the teams have to ensure the
systems supply the specified services while under attack from a
volunteer Red Team. In addition, the teams have to satisfy periodic
“injects” that simulate business activities IT staff must deal with in
the real world.
Event Objectives
- Build a meaningful mechanism by which institutions of higher education may evaluate their programs;
- Provide an educational venue in which students are able to apply the theory and skills they have learned in their course work;
- Foster a spirit of teamwork, ethical behavior, and effective communication both within and across teams; and
- Open a dialog and awareness among participating institutions and students
U.S. Cyber Challenge
Competitions & Camps
The U.S. Cyber Challenge develops
and conducts competitions and on-site camps that enable eligible
participants-including high school, college and post-graduate
students-to develop their skills, gain access to advanced training and
achieve recognition with scholarships, internships and jobs. USCC's
goal is to find talented Americans to fill the ranks of cyber security
professionals where their skills can be of the greatest value to the
nation.
High School Competition
Cyber Foundations has two parts: (1) on-line tutorial and video
education materials that allow students to expand their knowledge, and
(2) quizzes that allow students to demonstrate mastery. Three topics are
presented and tested: networking, operating systems, and system
administration. Each topic has a separate set of educational materials
and a separate test.

Cyber Patriot
CyberPatriot is the premiere
national high school cyber defense competition created to inspire high
school students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to
our nation’s future.
Now in its fourth phase, CyberPatriot IV is open to
all high schools, Civil Air Patrol Units, JROTC Units, and accredited
home school programs around the country.
The Competition
In each
competition round, students are provided one to three virtual machines.
These machine contain several vulnerabilities, and students must clean
the image of them. The virtual machines can have Windows or GNU/Linux
Operating systems. They are given a set
amount of time on the competition day to do so. Teams that find the most vulnerabilities pass on to the next round, and the winners of all three
rounds compete in the National Championships in Washington, D.C.
